Youhei's parents wonder if he'll be sad. Chi, meanwhile, just wants to play. Youhei's asleep, so Chi goes to find the father. Natural misinterpretation has Youhei's parents thinking that Chi is lonely too.
Youhei's father picks up Chi and hugs her, which elicits a DO NOT WANT reaction from Chi. Mother tries to calm Chi down, but gets scratched.
They receive a call from mother's friend, who apologizes that she can't take Chi. Her husband brought home a kitten from work that day, compliments of his boss. (Ie. Take it or gtfo.)
Youhei's family is just a bit overjoyed about this, and they decide to finally call Chi their own.
Thoughts:
Hmm, I perceive imminent clashing with the landlord/lady. :o

It’s funny but I can’t remember this bit at all. It probably happened in the manga but there’s just more good stuff later so I forgot. x.x

These eps about Chi gettinga new family weren’t in the manga at this point(or anywhere up to chapter 38), maybe it happened later, and Madhouse changed the order somewhat?
Or more likely, they just made this up, but meh~, logical development, so it’s ok in my book.

@ Caitlin: Hmm, judging by Ravage’s comment it didn’t.
@ Ravage: I didn’t read the manga at all. Maybe I should? In any case, it’s pretty commonplace for the anime to take liberties from the manga. =/
