Ga-Rei’s possible main character is Tooru, who has a rather harrowing past relating to some girl’s death, along with a good indication of the perpetrator, a white-haired boy with blue butterflies. (I say possible because the last time I presumed someone as a main character was with Shigofumi’s Machiya Shouta, and we all know how that turned out. Not that I’m saying that Tooru dies at the end of this episode. *coughs*) Tooru’s female counterpart and possible admirer is Natsuki, who just so happens to have long black hair, ride a motorbike, and likes girls.
Natsuki
Also Natsuki
Tooru and Natsuki are part of the Ghostbusters 4th Special Division, specializing in youma extermination. (Except they don’t call them youma in Ga-Rei Zero. I’m not exactly sure what they call them.) Some sort of disaster involving fires and wrecked cars is on the freeway. The 1st Special Mobile Division from the Ministry of Defense’s Supernatural Disaster Prevention Agency arrives first, shunting aside the confused firefighters.
The squad equips their scouters seekers, allowing them to see the youma-things (Identified as “Category C”), proceeding to shoot them. (I assume the bullets are special?) Thinking the threat neutralized, they deploy “Reisui” (Spirit water, lolslols) from their rifle-attached grenade launchers.
Ohgod do not want
…Not. Suddenly, out of nowhere, some huge Category B: Kasha dinosaur youma-thing appears (Srsly, how do you miss something that big?) and breathes fire (Oh, my.) on the hapless soldiers. More Category C’s pop up, annihilating the squad, just as Tooru and Natsuki arrive on the scene.
Who needs treads?
Tooru has some boring old dual-wielding pistols that don’t seem very effective. Natsuki, however, has talisman writing on her motorbike’s wheels, and (You’re going to love this.) she proceeds to combat the Category C’s with her motorbike.
Genius.
If you’re not following, click on the picture. Or here.
Masaki and Kudou arrive on the scene, spraying Reisui. The Kasha is so allergic to water that it runs away. [Blah blah insert some yet unimportant talk between the Ministry of Defense and Mr. Konparu, regarding the disaster and the Ministry of Environment. (Mr. Konparu is the sinister-looking head of the 4th special division. Also did I mention that all members of the 4th Special Division can see the youma-things without the need for a scouter seeker?)]
Distraction butterfly
So the problem is how to defeat the Kasha since it’s so big, but Konparu comes up with a plan. Natsuki lures the Kasha into some underground tunnel place, where Kudou will detonate a wall to let in water from the river, which Masaki will then polarize the water somehow to make it Reisui, and then Tooru will shoot the Kasha with a sniper rifle. Well, Tooru misses. He and Natsuki are saved from the onslaught of water by Masaki and Kudou.
This will not end well.
Afterwards, the team all have coffee when suddenly Masaki and then Kudou are killed by a Category A: girl with a sword. Tooru manages to escape, calling to Mami-chan (The support member.), but she’s been infected by some sort of headcrab thing. Konparu is already dead from a shot to the head, and Mami-chan kills herself as well.
Tooru then turns to Natsuki, but she, too, is dead, so we get a flashback. The girl in Tooru’s memory is his girlfriend Aoi, who was possessed/killed/corrupted/all of the above by the white-haired boy with blue butterflies. He is forced to shoot Aoi at the behest of a girl in a seifuku with a sword, the exact same girl who killed Masaki and Kudou. After the flashback, the girl kills Tooru.
And that’s that.
Thoughts:
Not this (presumable-main-character-dies-in-first-episode) again. Actually, it’s worse. Everyone’s dead. Including that sinister Gendou Konparu fellow. Therefore, prediction time. I predict that the main character(s) will all be revived by some sort of spirit process and the story will go on. Tooru does have a flashback, afterall. We all know people with flashbacks can’t die, at least not in the first episode.
Ga-Rei Zero seems interesting enough, though I can’t seem to take it too seriously. References to other anime, motorbikes don’t move that way, and headcrabs.
Anyway, let’s wrap up with some vocabulary. (Last-ditch attempt to cover anything that I haven’t/couldn’t fit in nicely.)
Category C: Weak, humanoid-looking spirit demon thing. Unable to be seen by normal humans.
Category B: Strong, beast-type spirit demon thing. Unable to be seen by normal humans.
Category A: Wtfhax human spirit demon person thing I have no bloody idea. May have once been human. Actually, might still be human. Unknown if normal humans can see it.
ETA: Estimated Time of Arrival.
Kasha: Giant dinosaur demon thing of Category B.
Mani bullet: Bullets or stones inscribed with Buddhist mantras.
Mantara Code: ???
Reisui: Spirit water.
045: Refers to the youma spirit demon things, Category A-C.
Special bullets indeed.
…Except I read up on Ga-Rei at Wikipedia and I think people die when they are killed in this anime.

Well, that first episode is an eye opener that’s for sure. It’s like the series started and ended all in one episode.

Yeah, descriptions of this show in various places do NOT jive with the contents of episode one. Which was awesome. But. Um, weird. Weird way of presenting the contents described on Wikipedia, MAL, etc.

I have no idea what to think, but their little trick worked. A show I was pretty ho-hum about is suddenly on my must-watch list for next week. I love series that start with a kick and a twist; the cinematic opening and silent end credits were gravy.

i think this is the prequel to the main characters story in the manga. the manga talks about a unfortunate even that happened before.

Well, I just loved this because the killing was awesome. It’s not everyday you come across an anime where people get slit in pieces!

Should I watch this series?… Still deciding….

Looks nice O_O

I will watch this, seriously, sometime this week. I just have to go through another post and then I’ll go watch.
This is a nice piece, I must say. Heck, i thought this would be crappy! And of course I was wrong…

Oh shi—–t…. I’ve been longing for some dark series for a long time now.
People die when they are killed. I think I’ll stick with Corpse Princess and Chaos;Head for now and maybe I’ll try this later if you say it gets interesting later on. I’ll leave it to you.
Those are the absolute badass tires there.

@ Webbmaster62: Not really new to me, though
@ lolikit: Weird?
@ otou-san: The silent end was sort of …what… for me
@ chimasternmay: Possibly.
@ blissmo: Yes yes, we all know your affection for violence.
@ Arachnicus: I am still deciding as well.
@ zenical: It has promise, no doubt.
@ Rakuen: Well, it was on my “MAYBE” list, and Nagato never goes wrong. ;D
@ Alex: You gore fanatic you.

Oh wait… what am I saying? I saw Mnemosyne through the end, so it wasn’t that long ago… Last ep of that on DVD is out, just so you know….
