Hey, Rakuen here. Been a hefty while since I’ve posted anything, so I’ll be back with a couple of editorials since there’s no more series for me to review this season. I’ll also be posting a preview of upcoming series next season (Spring 2009) and my thoughts on it.
Anyhow, back to business, “Looking Back” will be another series of posts with relation to my previous anime watching experiences, and my take on them.
This episode is on “Loser Boys” in anime. If anyone doesn’t friggin’ know what that means, think Keitaro Urashima of Love Hina.
Loser boys. They’re the most degraded character species in anime. Two levels lower in the food chain compared to the geeks jabbering about Dungeons and Dragons. They normally get pawned by the jocks, get pawned even by the geeks, get pawned by the girls, and get pawned by kids. They fly to great distances and I mean that literally. Yet there’s something I find weird despite all this: THEY STILL GET HAREM!!!
Yes. Apparently, anime still find Loser boys essential, like in harem series.
They get the good-looking heroine, the loli, the pesky Indian girl that Baka-Raptor hates, the drunken slut, and my favorite– the miko-samurai. But is this the only reason why I hate loser boys?
Nope.
Here are the other reasons based on the usual Loser boy stereotype:
They don’t know what to do at sexy times. They’d normally go “What should I do? What should I do?” and lose perfectly good timing. The perfect phrase is supposed to be “BANZAI”, or “Onward to battle!”. But I do support Loser boys who are still gentlemen, dressing a soaking girl after a rain, or putting his jacket over her.
They are absolute pussies. They don’t have a sense of self worth, thinking that they’re useless and complete imbeciles, which can be true at times. Since they get pawned by almost everyone in the series, they have to rely on the samurai-miko to save their asses.
Wips. Since they don’t normally exercise (well, most of them), saving the girls is a pain in the ass sometimes, normally they’re the ones who need saving.
But I don’t hate all loser boys. Here are some that I came to like.
Sakurada Jun. He appeared to me as a bitchy character at first, but he came to realize his responsibility with the dolls. I don’t consider him as a lolicon at all too. If Shinku was in human size, she’d be about Jun’s height.
Ikari Shinji. He may have been a complete emo, and a complete pervert too. But he redeemed his loser-ness by not pussy-ing on piloting an Evangelion. He is a redeemed loser boy.
So in the end, what make a loser boy a loser boy? Maybe it’s just because he’s a loser. Be the judge.

Are loser males are so common in anime because authors think they’re creating characters we can relate to? I see that as an attack on my manhood.

Damn, you must really have guts to call my favorite character a loser, and don’t admit that you like him!

I hate loser boys and much as I hate the quiet, shy girls.
For gods sake people, show some RAWR!
